A nasty cough racks through you as you lounge uncomfortably in the submarine’s 'living room'. Currently, you were thrown across the couch with a tank top and a pair of shorts on in an attempt to free yourself of the sweltering heat that seemed to only affect you. “So hot….” You groan.

“___-chan… are you alright? You look kind of pale--” Shachi starts, worriedly.

“NOPE I’M TOTALLY FINE. SWELL. FANTASTIC. PERFECT. ABSOLUTELY PEACHY.” You suddenly interrupt him, falling off of the couch in an attempt to scurry across the room and silence your crewmate.

“Are you sure?” Penguin asks, obviously not receiving the hint, “You really don’t look so--”

You fling yourself onto him and cover his mouth desperately, “Please. Shut up.” You pull yourself away from him as you straighten your hair and clothes out. Glancing around, to make sure the coast was clear, you sigh and let your shoulders slump and eyelids droop when you find no sign of anyone other than Penguin and Shachi. You gesture them closer and the three of you get into a huddle, “Okay, to tell you the truth… I’m really not feeling so hot right now…” You confess to the two quietly, “Heh… Well, that’s not entirely true. I am feeling hot. It’s hotter than the gates of Hell, in my opinion, but that’s not the point.” You take a moment to dab a bit at the sweat on your neck with the neckline of your tank top. Being huddled up definitely made the heat worse. Not to mention the boys were still shoved into the jumpsuits - for some reason that obviously slipped you - which practically multiplied their body heat. “Look can you just…. Please don’t tell Cap, alright? We all know what happens when someone shows the slightest bit of health issues. Besides, we’re approaching a different seasoned island so it’s probably just allergies, or something.” You try playing it off. Following this, you clear your throat to try and rid it of a tickle that was building in the back of it.

Before the boys could confirm or deny whether they’d help cover for you, the entire group stiffens when someone pointedly clears their throat in the doorway across from you. All of you turn your heads - yourself having to bend slightly to the side to see past your crewmates - slowly to peer at the person who had made their presence known. Personally,  you have to choke down a scream as the man’s eyes bore directly into your own. There was no way he already knew, right?

“H-hey, captain! Um… What’s up?” You try to play it off and force yourself not to glance away or else you’d seem even more suspicious.

“.... What were you three doing?” Your captain, Trafalgar Law, questions with his gaze still trained on you suspiciously.

“O-oh, you know! Just the, uh, usual… stuff.” You shift just oh-so slightly as your nerves continue to build. Of course, you notice that as you do this Law’s gaze surveys you quickly.

Crap, he’s totally on to me! You panic inwardly.

“Stuff?” He continues to probe coolly.

You couldn’t think of any excuse as you stutter slightly to answer him, but it’s Penguin that speaks up first to cover for you.

“Yeah, you know, Captain! Like.... ___’s cooking! She said she was thinking of making some cookies after she finishes dinner, tonight; however, she doesn’t know whether or not we have enough ingredients.” Penguin covers for you quickly.

You thank the man silently and remind yourself to actually make him some cookies at some later point. For now, though, you were more focused on containing that same tickle in the back of your throat that seemed to be growing in irritation. Like you were going to cough it out in front of the doctor turned captain in front of you. You weren’t stupid. So, you remain silent to keep the tickle from worsening.

“___-ya.” Your captain orders your attention.

Well, so much for that plan. You grumble miserably in your head before lifting your head to look Law in the eye, “Yes, captain?” You question innocently, but instantly regret it when the tickle becomes worse. God, it was almost unbearable.

Law looks you in the eye for a few extended moments before glancing away, “Nevermind.” He dismisses before heading past your group of three to continue out of the room through the opposing door.

Suddenly, that nagging tickle in the back of your throat does become unbearable and you can’t help when you subconsciously begin coughing to try and clear it. As soon as you realize what you had done you freeze on spot.

    As did your captain.

Well... that sounded way worse than it should’ve. Actually, it kind of hurt my chest a bit... You comment mentally as you apply a pressured rub to your chest to try and disperse the remaining tight feeling. Your eyes trace their way up from the ground to land on the frozen forms of Penguin and Shachi..

‘Run.’ Shachi mouths, which only causes you to quirk an eyebrow in confusion. Why would he be telling you to --

    “___-ya.”

    Oh.

    That’s why.

Your muscles instantly tense at your captain’s voice behind you. He hadn’t left the room, yet?!

“I’ll give you one chance to answer me, ___-ya. And do not lie to me.” You turn to face your captain, “Are you feeling ill?”

    Crap.

You whine to yourself, inwardly, He’ll totally see right through it if I actually lie. Which means… I’m left with only one other choice. With that decision made in your head, you begin to answer, “Well, you see, Captain--” You instantly cut yourself off as you turn and dart out the door that your captain had previously entered through.

“___-ya!” The man's angry voice practically shakes the metal walls of the submarine as you dart through the hallways in the opposite direction as him as quickly as your sore legs would carry you.

“NO WAY, CAPTAIN!” You call back in a panic before he could even say another word. You huffed and wheezed as the sudden exercise probably wasn’t the best idea in terms of your health, at the moment.

“Get back here so I can give you some medicine, ___-ya!” Law responds, sounding closer than previously.

“BEPO. PLEASE. OUTTA THE WAY. YOU’RE IN THE WAY.” You call to the large polar bear as he wanders out of a room and into your path. He blinks before retracing his steps backwards into the room he had just exited from - clear that he didn’t even want to deal with what was happening in front of him..

“I’M NOT TAKING ANY MEDICINE, CAPTAIN! I WON’T EVEN TAKE IT OVER MY DEAD BODY!” You screech back to him as you skid around a corner, almost having to grab hold of said corner when your feet nearly slip out from underneath you in your mad dash for escape.

“If you keep this up, that very well may be what happens!” He growls to you, much closer now than previously.

“YOU’RE EXAGGERATING. DOCTOR’S SHOULDN’T EXAGGERATE ILLNESSES. NOT THAT I’M SAYING I’M ILL, OR ANYTHING. JUST SAYIN’.”

“And patients should listen to their doctor…!” You hear him growl once more, “___-YA, WE’RE ON A SUBMARINE THAT’S UNDERWATER. YOU CAN’T KEEP RUNNING FOREVER.” He growls after you.

“I WILL OPEN THE HATCH AND SWIM. I WILL DITCH YOU GUYS SO FAST IT WON’T EVEN BE FUNNY. DON'T TRY ME. I’M NOT DRINKING THAT BILGE YOU TRY TO GIVE ME.”

There’s one last growl behind you before it becomes silent and you can feel his presence leaving from being so close to you. You don’t take any chances, though, and continue to run until you reach another door. Flinging it open, you stumble inside before closing and locking it with some pants as you attempt to calm your racing heartbeat. Now that things were mildly calm, you take a moment to glance around and figure out where you were since all of that blind running had gotten you turned around about your location in the submarine.

And it had made you feel unwell even more so than before.

Not that you were to begin with.

Man, the things that adrenaline could accomplish.

As soon as you noticed the industrial sized freezer and the heap of dirty dishes in the sink, you automatically deduce that your current position was in the kitchen. Which, surprisingly enough, was connected by a single metal-shuttered window to the room where all this madness started. You take in a deep breath and let it out slowly and quietly. No way he’d think you’d circle all the way back around, right?

So, with that thought in mind, you let yourself relax just a bit. Even still, you unlocked the door once more and peered out into the hall to double check your surroundings. Right, clear… Left, clear... You sigh in relief and shut the door back quietly, before ambling around the kitchen in silence.

For a short while you ponder how long you would have to be holed up in the kitchen before it was safe to come out. Not that it would be much of a problem, of course. You had food and drink and you found that the bags of flour lying on the floor wouldn't make for such bad pillows, if push came to shove. Although, you did foresee some complications if you found yourself in need of the restroom.

Your Pondering on the living arrangements for this single room is suddenly interrupted when the sound of a door being opened reaches your ears. You smirk, Haha, Law! Too bad for you, but I locked the door!

Your boasting look falls and you stop. You locked the door, right? Eyes wide, you turn in a flash to lunge for the door lock, but are beat by the the sudden blue bubble that surrounded you.

Room.” Law’s voice orders his Devil fruit ability.

"Oh no." You breathe. As you notice him picking up a nearby plate, you scramble to flee the blue bubble. He tosses the plate into the air.

"Shambles." He orders once more, holding both arms out as if about to catch someone.

    "Oh no." You repeat.

There's a noise, and suddenly you're falling from above Law. As you land in his arms, the plate crashes to the floor where you were previously standing and shatters. You instantly begin to struggle and try to escape his grasp, but he doesn't have to tighten his grasp on you much to keep you from going anywhere in your ailing state.

"Dang it, Captain! Let me go!" You thrash about as much as you can. There's a sound of the metal-shuttered window being lifted open as Penguin and Shachi come to inspect the commotion. As soon as you see the two, you start struggling from Law's grip and towards your fellow crew mates, "Guys, come on! Give me a little help, here!" You plead, trying to reach out to them. They freeze and you can see a shiver run up them as your Captain sends a glare at them.

"Close the window, and do not interfere." Law orders the two men.

"Y-yes, sir!" They reply shakily in unison, before quickly reaching up and pulling the shutter back down with a slam.

"Captain, come on! I'm fine, see! Fine!" You decide to plead with Law since, obviously, your two friends were going to do nothing to help you. A bead of nervous sweat trails down your temple.

"___-ya, it's just a precaution! Take the medicine, already!" Law growls, shifting you to hold you with one arm as he produces a vial of medicine from his jacket with his free hand.

"Noooo!" You groan, leaning away when the doctor tries to tip the vial to your lips. You could just imagine the little tick mark popping up at his temple as you annoy him with your perverse behavior. It was already hard enough for him to hold you with one arm at an angle at which he could get the medicine to your mouth without your struggling.

Law growls once more, before striding stiffly to one of the clean counters and dropping you unceremoniously unto the counter’s top. With a glare, the man grabs your chin and forces you to lean back. Iron grip in place, so you wouldn't move your head away, he brings the vial to your lips once more. "Drink it." He orders.

"NNNNNH!" You groan again, mouth clenched shut in protest as you tried (and failed) to turn your face away once more. Law growls your name intimidatingly, but you refused to give in. Suddenly, you kick your feet up against the man's chest and try to pry him away from yourself. He quickly steps back, making your feet kick out with enough force to make you slip onto your back from your sitting position on the slick counter top.

As your attention is drawn away from him momentarily, the sly man does something that, if you'd seen it, would've made you pale and make another mad dash for the door as he closes in on you again.

"Grrr.... I already told you, Captain Law! I'm not---!" The hand you had hiding your mouth from the medicine is suddenly being grasped and pulled away from you as your captain leans in, slowly - a smirk playing on his lips just ever-so-slightly. Before you can question your captain about his strange actions, he has leaned forward and forced his lips onto yours. You gasp in shock and instantly freeze. Of course, the sly man takes this moment to force the medicine from his mouth to your own, before gently coaxing you to swallow it with his tongue. He lingers a bit longer before pulling back with that slight smirk now full blown, devious, and clear across his face. He licks away the thin trace of medicine on his own lips while you cough and gag at the disgusting liquid.

"Captain!" You growl, regaining yourself despite the blush still present across your features. A thought instantly comes to your mind, and you give him a seductive smile that plays at your lips, before you place your hand on his chest and push him back so you could push yourself off of the counter, "You're so gonna regret that!" You murmur in a low and alluring tone. You could feel his muscles tense beneath your hand as he takes instant notice of your sudden change in demeanor. What he didn't notice, however, was your other hand that was sneaking behind you to bag - a bag of which a few of the contents had fallen out during the 'struggle' - to grab some weaponry against the strange captain.

You take a step forward, and he takes one back in response. You keep your hand, that was clutching your revenge, out of Law's sight and behind your back. The other hand, on the other hand, trailed its way up teasingly from the tanned man's chest to cup his face. "You know that phrase? About how revenge is a dish best served cold?" You purr, tracing your thumb along the top of Law’s cheekbone. Before he can even answer, you take another step forward to make him take another step back. The hand cupping his face slithers around to the back of his head and you play your fingers through the stray hairs that escaped from underneath his fuzzy hat before slowly pulling yourself up to him as you also pull his head down.

Right before your lips meet his, you hesitate for a brief moment before picking up your foot and slamming it down onto one of his. As he opens his mouth to shout in surprise, you shove the "weapon" - a slice of sandwich bread - into his mouth and use the hand that was once behind his head to shove his mouth shut.

"I like to think of it as a dish best served starchy." You hiss. As you dart away from him and out of the kitchen, you can hear his coughs as he spits out the bread you had forced into his mouth.

    "___-YA!"

Here's my first Trafalgar D. Water Law x Reader!
This has a word count of 2,696, apparently.

This is my entry to Jaq-Rabbit's contest. I chose to enter the reader-insert writing portion of the contest with my favorite One Piece character - Law!

Also, I'm crying a bit on the inside because I was so excited to get this written and now that I think about it I bet this is a very common scenario for Law reader-inserts. God dangit.

ALSO FIRST TIME WRITING ANY OF THE HEART PIRATE MEMBERS SO SORRY IF I SUCK LOL

One Piece is so much fun to write for. Wow. I've got notes written down for another Law x reader as well as an AU!One Piece x Reader story that I'm just... 100% yes on that.
One of the made up characters for the AU is an Italian dude who swears and so I've been having fun researching Italian profanity but I'm afraid I'm going to offend someone if I post it. Lol
